Diagnosis and Treatment of Alopecia

Alopecia is a somewhat rare condition that affects men and women. It causes complete hair loss on the scalp or entire body. At the initial stages of hair loss Alopecia may appear as a normal balding condition. Alopecia is a strange disorder because the individuals that are diagnosed do not appear to have any other health problems or disorders. In fact, most patients with Alopecia are perfectly healthy individuals.

Types of Alopecia:

  • It can occur only on facial hair, or beards.
  • It can occur only on the scalp in concentrated areas.
  • It can occur all over the body head to toe.
  • Total body Alopecia is rare.

For most people small patches start off balding and soft hairs are left behind. It looks like normal balding to begin with, but can quickly turn ugly. Alopecia is best treated if it is caught early on.

Who Does Alopecia Effect?

Alopecia usually affects anyone. Those with a family history of autoimmune diseases are most likely to develop alopecia. A very small percentage of people around the world do develop this condition, but it is rare. Full body alopecia is extremely rare and only occurs at a fraction of a percent. Other conditions and disorders are most likely to cause alopecia in certain individuals, but healthy people get the disease too.

Treatment Options

Half of those that are diagnosed with Alopecia grow their hair back within 12 months. The reason for this occurring is largely unknown. There are a few treatment options that are both by prescription or “self” purchased. Many of the chemical treatments used to treat alopecia are expensive and dangerous. Corticosteroids are one of such treatments that carry adverse side effects and can cause worse problems later on.

Some good options are using herbal treatments to help regrow hair. Since Alopecia is a “picky” disease, it may or may not work. There are a few hair loss remedies on the market that treat alopecia related hair loss quite effectively.

Using growth stimulating products such as herbal shampoos or creams or pills can dramatically increase the recovery period of the lost hair. For example, if the hair has just begun falling out in clumps or patches, then a treatment can help it regrow in less than the usual 1 year time frame.

With Alopecia treatment isn’t necessary but can be helpful in reducing embarrassment.
